2025-10-15[clang] NFC: rename TagType::getOriginalDecl back to getDecl (#163271)Matheus Izvekov
This rename was made as part of https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/147835 in order to ease rebasing the PR, and give a nice window for other patches to get rebased as well. It has been a while already, so lets go ahead and rename it back.
2025-10-09[AllocToken, Clang] Infer type hints from sizeof expressions and casts (#156841)Marco Elver
For the AllocToken pass to accurately calculate token ID hints, we need to attach `!alloc_token` metadata for allocation calls. Unlike new expressions, untyped allocation calls (like `malloc`, `calloc`, `::operator new(..)`, `__builtin_operator_new`, etc.) have no syntactic type associated with them. For -fsanitize=alloc-token, type hints are sufficient, and we can attempt to infer the type based on common idioms. When encountering allocation calls (with `__attribute__((malloc))` or `__attribute__((alloc_size(..))`), attach `!alloc_token` by inferring the allocated type from (a) sizeof argument expressions such as `malloc(sizeof(MyType))`, and (b) casts such as `(MyType*)malloc(4096)`. Note that non-standard allocation functions with these attributes are not instrumented by default. Use `-fsanitize-alloc-token-extended` to instrument them as well. 2025-10-06[HLSL] Add support for elementwise and aggregate splat casting struct types ↵Sarah Spall
with bitfields (#161263) Adds support for elementwise and aggregate splat casting struct types with bitfields. Replacing existing Flattening function which used to produce a list of GEPs representing a flattened object with one that produces a list of LValues representing a flattened object. The LValues can be used by EmitStoreThroughLValue and EmitLoadOfLValue, ensuring bitfields are properly loaded and stored. This also simplifies the code in the elementwise and aggregate splat casting functions. Closes #125986

2025-08-27[UBSan][BoundsSafety] Implement support for more expressive "trap reasons" ↵Dan Liew
(#154618) In 29992cfd628ed5b968ccb73b17ed0521382ba317 (#145967) support was added for "trap reasons" on traps emitted in UBSan in trapping mode (e.g. `-fsanitize-trap=undefined`). This improved the debugging experience by attaching the reason for trapping as a string on the debug info on trap instructions. Consumers such as LLDB can display this trap reason string when the trap is reached. A limitation of that patch is that the trap reason string is hard-coded for each `SanitizerKind` even though the compiler actually has much more information about the trap available at compile time that could be shown to the user. This patch is an incremental step in fixing that. It consists of two main steps. **1. Introduce infrastructure for building trap reason strings** To make it convenient to construct trap reason strings this patch re-uses Clang's powerful diagnostic infrastructure to provide a convenient API for constructing trap reason strings. This is achieved by: * Introducing a new `Trap` diagnostic kind to represent trap diagnostics in TableGen files. * Adding a new `Trap` diagnostic component. While this part probably isn't technically necessary it seemed like I should follow the existing convention used by the diagnostic system. * Adding `DiagnosticTrapKinds.td` to describe the different trap reasons. * Add the `TrapReasonBuilder` and `TrapReason` classes to provide an interface for constructing trap reason strings and the trap category. Note this API while similar to `DiagnosticBuilder` has different semantics which are described in the code comments. In particular the behavior when the destructor is called is very different. * Adding `CodeGenModule::BuildTrapReason()` as a convenient constructor for the `TrapReasonBuilder`. This use of the diagnostic system is a little unusual in that the emitted trap diagnostics aren't actually consumed by normal diagnostic consumers (e.g. the console). Instead the `TrapReasonBuilder` is just used to format a string, so in effect the builder is somewhat analagous to "printf". However, re-using the diagnostics system in this way brings a several benefits: * The powerful diagnostic templating languge (e.g. `%select`) can be used. * Formatting Clang data types (e.g. `Type`, `Expr`, etc.) just work out-of-the-box. * Describing trap reasons in tablegen files opens the door for translation to different languages in the future. * The `TrapReasonBuilder` API is very similar to `DiagnosticBuilder` which makes it easy to use by anyone already familiar with Clang's diagnostic system. While UBSan is the first consumer of this new infrastructure the intent is to use this to overhaul how trap reasons are implemented in the `-fbounds-safety` implementation (currently exists downstream). **2. Apply the new infrastructure to UBSan checks for arithmetic overflow** To demonstrate using `TrapReasonBuilder` this patch applies it to UBSan traps for arithmetic overflow. The intention is that we would iteratively switch to using the `TrapReasonBuilder` for all UBSan traps where it makes sense in future patches. Previously for code like ``` int test(int a, int b) { return a + b; } ``` The trap reason string looked like ``` Undefined Behavior Sanitizer: Integer addition overflowed ``` now the trap message looks like: ``` Undefined Behavior Sanitizer: signed integer addition overflow in 'a + b' ``` This string is much more specific because * It explains if signed or unsigned overflow occurred * It actually shows the expression that overflowed One possible downside of this approach is it may blow up Debug info size because now there can be many more distinct trap reason strings. To allow users to avoid this a new driver/cc1 flag `-fsanitize-debug-trap-reasons=` has been added which can either be `none` (disable trap reasons entirely), `basic` (use the per `SanitizerKind` hard coded strings), and `detailed` (use the new expressive trap reasons implemented in this patch). The default is `detailed` to give the best out-of-the-box debugging experience. The existing `-fsanitize-debug-trap-reasons` and `-fno-sanitize-debug-trap-reasons` have been kept for compatibility and are aliases of the new flag with `detailed` and `none` arguments passed respectively. rdar://158612755

2025-08-25[Clang][CodeGen] Preserve alignment information for pointer arithmetics ↵Yingwei Zheng
(#152575) Previously, the alignment of pointer arithmetics was inferred from the pointee type, losing the alignment information from its operands: https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/503c0908c3450d228debd64baecf41df8f58476e/clang/lib/CodeGen/CGExpr.cpp#L1446-L1449 This patch preserves alignment information for pointer arithmetics `P +/- C`, to match the behavior of identical array subscript `&P[C]`: https://godbolt.org/z/xx1hfTrx4. Closes https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/152330. Although the motivating case can be fixed by https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/145733, the alignment cannot be recovered without a dominating memory access with larger alignment.
2025-08-20[Clang] Support using boolean vectors in ternary operators (#154145)Joseph Huber
Summary: It's extremely common to conditionally blend two vectors. Previously this was done with mask registers, which is what the normal ternary code generation does when used on a vector. However, since Clang 15 we have supported boolean vector types in the compiler. These are useful in general for checking the mask registers, but are currently limited because they do not map to an LLVM-IR select instruction. This patch simply relaxes these checks, which are technically forbidden by the OpenCL standard. However, general vector support should be able to handle these. We already support this for Arm SVE types, so this should be make more consistent with the clang vector type.
2025-08-09[clang] Improve nested name specifier AST representation (#147835)Matheus Izvekov
This is a major change on how we represent nested name qualifications in the AST. * The nested name specifier itself and how it's stored is changed. The prefixes for types are handled within the type hierarchy, which makes canonicalization for them super cheap, no memory allocation required. Also translating a type into nested name specifier form becomes a no-op. An identifier is stored as a DependentNameType. The nested name specifier gains a lightweight handle class, to be used instead of passing around pointers, which is similar to what is implemented for TemplateName. There is still one free bit available, and this handle can be used within a PointerUnion and PointerIntPair, which should keep bit-packing aficionados happy. * The ElaboratedType node is removed, all type nodes in which it could previously apply to can now store the elaborated keyword and name qualifier, tail allocating when present. * TagTypes can now point to the exact declaration found when producing these, as opposed to the previous situation of there only existing one TagType per entity. This increases the amount of type sugar retained, and can have several applications, for example in tracking module ownership, and other tools which care about source file origins, such as IWYU. These TagTypes are lazily allocated, in order to limit the increase in AST size. This patch offers a great performance benefit. It greatly improves compilation time for [stdexec](https://github.com/NVIDIA/stdexec). For one datapoint, for `test_on2.cpp` in that project, which is the slowest compiling test, this patch improves `-c` compilation time by about 7.2%, with the `-fsyntax-only` improvement being at ~12%. This has great results on compile-time-tracker as well: ![image](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/700dce98-2cab-4aa8-97d1-b038c0bee831) This patch also further enables other optimziations in the future, and will reduce the performance impact of template specialization resugaring when that lands. It has some other miscelaneous drive-by fixes. About the review: Yes the patch is huge, sorry about that. Part of the reason is that I started by the nested name specifier part, before the ElaboratedType part, but that had a huge performance downside, as ElaboratedType is a big performance hog. I didn't have the steam to go back and change the patch after the fact. There is also a lot of internal API changes, and it made sense to remove ElaboratedType in one go, versus removing it from one type at a time, as that would present much more churn to the users. Also, the nested name specifier having a different API avoids missing changes related to how prefixes work now, which could make existing code compile but not work. How to review: The important changes are all in `clang/include/clang/AST` and `clang/lib/AST`, with also important changes in `clang/lib/Sema/TreeTransform.h`. The rest and bulk of the changes are mostly consequences of the changes in API. PS: TagType::getDecl is renamed to `getOriginalDecl` in this patch, just for easier to rebasing. I plan to rename it back after this lands. 2025-05-27[C2y] Fix _Countof handling of VLAs (#141621)Aaron Ballman
It turns out that getVLASize() does not get you the size of a single dimension of the VLA, it gets you the full count of all elements. This caused _Countof to return invalid values on VLA ranks. Now switched to using getVLAElements1D() instead, which only gets a single dimension. Fixes #141409

2025-05-14[RISCV] Improve casting between i1 scalable vectors and i8 fixed vectors for ↵Craig Topper
-mrvv-vector-bits (#139190) For i1 vectors, we used an i8 fixed vector as the storage type. If the known minimum number of elements of the scalable vector type is less than 8, we were doing the cast through memory. This used a load or store from a fixed vector alloca. If is less than 8, DataLayout indicates that the load/store reads/writes vscale bytes even if vscale is known and vscale*X is less than or equal to 8. This means the load or store is outside the bounds of the fixed size alloca as far as DataLayout is concerned leading to undefined behavior. This patch avoids this by widening the i1 scalable vector type with zero elements until it is divisible by 8. This allows it be bitcasted to/from an i8 scalable vector. We then insert or extract the i8 fixed vector into this type. Hopefully this enables #130973 to be accepted.

2025-05-09clang: Remove dest LangAS argument from performAddrSpaceCast (#138866)Matt Arsenault
It isn't used and is redundant with the result pointer type argument. A more reasonable API would only have LangAS parameters, or IR parameters, not both. Not all values have a meaningful value for this. I'm also not sure why we have this at all, it's not overridden by any targets and further simplification is possible.

2025-03-27[C2y] Implement WG14 N3369 and N3469 (_Countof) (#133125)Aaron Ballman
C2y adds the `_Countof` operator which returns the number of elements in an array. As with `sizeof`, `_Countof` either accepts a parenthesized type name or an expression. Its operand must be (of) an array type. When passed a constant-size array operand, the operator is a constant expression which is valid for use as an integer constant expression. This is being exposed as an extension in earlier C language modes, but not in C++. C++ already has `std::extent` and `std::size` to cover these needs, so the operator doesn't seem to get the user enough benefit to warrant carrying this as an extension. Fixes #102836

2025-02-27[clang][CodeGen] Additional fixes for #114062 (#128166)Alex Voicu

Unconditionally stripping casts from a pre-allocated return slot was incorrect / insufficient (this is illustrated by the `amdgcn_sret_ctor.cpp` test); 2. Putting compiler manufactured sret args in a non default AS can lead to a C-cast (surprisingly) requiring an AS cast (this is illustrated by the `sret_cast_with_nonzero_alloca_as.cpp test). The way we handle (2), by subverting CK_BitCast emission iff a sret arg is involved, is quite naff, but I couldn't think of any other way to use a non default indirect AS and make this case work (hopefully this is a failure of imagination on my part).

2025-01-28[Clang] Add -fwrapv-pointer flag (#122486)Nikita Popov
GCC supports three flags related to overflow behavior: * `-fwrapv`: Makes signed integer overflow well-defined. * `-fwrapv-pointer`: Makes pointer overflow well-defined. * `-fno-strict-overflow`: Implies `-fwrapv -fwrapv-pointer`, making both signed integer overflow and pointer overflow well-defined. Clang currently only supports `-fno-strict-overflow` and `-fwrapv`, but not `-fwrapv-pointer`. This PR proposes to introduce `-fwrapv-pointer` and adjust the semantics of `-fwrapv` to match GCC. This allows signed integer overflow and pointer overflow to be controlled independently, while `-fno-strict-overflow` still exists to control both at the same time (and that option is consistent across GCC and Clang).
2025-01-10[ubsan][NFCI] Use SanitizerOrdinal instead of SanitizerMask for EmitCheck ↵Thurston Dang
(exactly one sanitizer is required) (#122511) The `Checked` parameter of `CodeGenFunction::EmitCheck` is of type `ArrayRef<std::pair<llvm::Value *, SanitizerMask>>`, which is overly generalized: SanitizerMask can denote that zero or more sanitizers are enabled, but `EmitCheck` requires that exactly one sanitizer is specified in the SanitizerMask (e.g., `SanitizeTrap.has(Checked[i].second)` enforces that). This patch replaces SanitizerMask with SanitizerOrdinal in the `Checked` parameter of `EmitCheck` and code that transitively relies on it. This should not affect the behavior of UBSan, but it has the advantages that: - the code is clearer: it avoids ambiguity in EmitCheck about what to do if multiple bits are set - specifying the wrong number of sanitizers in `Checked[i].second` will be detected as a compile-time error, rather than a runtime assertion failure Suggested by Vitaly in https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/122392 as an alternative to adding an explicit runtime assertion that the SanitizerMask contains exactly one sanitizer.
2025-01-09[Clang] Adjust pointer-overflow sanitizer for N3322 (#120719)Nikita Popov
N3322 makes NULL + 0 well-defined in C, matching the C++ semantics. Adjust the pointer-overflow sanitizer to no longer report NULL + 0 as a pointer overflow in any language mode. NULL + nonzero will of course continue to be reported. As N3322 is part of https://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg14/www/previous.html, and we never performed any optimizations based on NULL + 0 being undefined in the first place, I'm applying this change to all C versions.
2025-01-09[Coverage] Introduce the type `CounterPair` for RegionCounterMap. NFC. (#112724)NAKAMURA Takumi
`CounterPair` can hold `<uint32_t, uint32_t>` instead of current `unsigned`, to hold also the counter number of SkipPath. For now, this change provides the skeleton and only `CounterPair::Executed` is used. Each counter number can have `None` to suppress emitting counter increment. 2nd element `Skipped` is initialized as `None` by default, since most `Stmt*` don't have a pair of counters. This change also provides stubs for the verifier. I'll provide the impl of verifier for `+Asserts` later. `markStmtAsUsed(bool, Stmt*)` may be used to inform that other side counter may not emitted. `markStmtMaybeUsed(S)` may be used for the `Stmt` and its inner will be excluded for emission in the case of skipping by constant folding. I put it into places where I found. `verifyCounterMap()` will check the coverage map and the counter map, and can be used to report inconsistency. These verifier methods shall be eliminated in `-Asserts`. https://discourse.llvm.org/t/rfc-integrating-singlebytecoverage-with-branch-coverage/82492
2025-01-07[clang] Fix crashes when passing VLA to va_arg (#119563)天音あめ
Closes #119360. This bug occurs when passing a VLA to `va_arg`. Since the return value is inferred to be an array, it triggers `ScalarExprEmitter::VisitCastExpr`, which converts it to a pointer and subsequently calls `CodeGenFunction::EmitAggExpr`. At this point, because the inferred type is an `AggExpr` instead of a `ScalarExpr`, `ScalarExprEmitter::VisitVAArgExpr` is not invoked, and as a result, `CodeGenFunction::EmitVariablyModifiedType` is also not called, leading to the size of the VLA not being retrieved. The solution is to move the call to `CodeGenFunction::EmitVariablyModifiedType` into `CodeGenFunction::EmitVAArg`, ensuring that the size of the VLA is correctly obtained regardless of whether the expression is an `AggExpr` or a `ScalarExpr`.
2024-12-10[Clang] Change two placeholders from `undef` to `poison` [NFC] (#119141)Pedro Lobo
- Use `poison` instead of `undef` as a phi operand for an unreachable path (the predecessor will not go the BB that uses the value of the phi). - Call `@llvm.vector.insert` with a `poison` subvec when performing a `bitcast` from a fixed vector to a scalable vector.
2024-12-06[clang][AArch64] Fix C++11 style initialization of typedef'd vectors (#118956)Benjamin Maxwell
Previously, this hit an `llvm_unreachable()` assertion as the type of `vec_t` did not exactly match `__SVInt8_t`, as it was wrapped in a typedef. Comparing the canonical types instead allows the types to match correctly and avoids the crash. Fixes #107609

2024-11-03[Clang] Implement labelled type filtering for overflow/truncation sanitizers ↵Justin Stitt
w/ SSCLs (#107332) [Related RFC](https://discourse.llvm.org/t/rfc-support-globpattern-add-operator-to-invert-matches/80683/5?u=justinstitt) ### Summary Implement type-based filtering via [Sanitizer Special Case Lists](https://clang.llvm.org/docs/SanitizerSpecialCaseList.html) for the arithmetic overflow and truncation sanitizers. Currently, using the `type:` prefix with these sanitizers does nothing. I've hooked up the SSCL parsing with Clang codegen so that we don't emit the overflow/truncation checks if the arithmetic contains an ignored type. ### Usefulness You can craft ignorelists that ignore specific types that are expected to overflow or wrap-around. For example, to ignore `my_type` from `unsigned-integer-overflow` instrumentation: ```bash $ cat ignorelist.txt [unsigned-integer-overflow] type:my_type=no_sanitize $ cat foo.c typedef unsigned long my_type; void foo() { my_type a = ULONG_MAX; ++a; } $ clang foo.c -fsanitize=unsigned-integer-overflow -fsanitize-ignorelist=ignorelist.txt ; ./a.out // --> no sanitizer error ``` If a type is functionally intended to overflow, like [refcount_t](https://kernsec.org/wiki/index.php/Kernel_Protections/refcount_t) and its associated APIs in the Linux kernel, then this type filtering would prove useful for reducing sanitizer noise. Currently, the Linux kernel dealt with this by [littering](https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/v6.10.8/source/include/linux/refcount.h#L139 ) `__attribute__((no_sanitize("signed-integer-overflow")))` annotations on all the `refcount_t` APIs. I think this serves as an example of how a codebase could be made cleaner. We could make custom types that are filtered out in an ignorelist, allowing for types to be more expressive -- without the need for annotations. This accomplishes a similar goal to https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/86618. Yet another use case for this type filtering is whitelisting. We could ignore _all_ types, save a few. ```bash $ cat ignorelist.txt [implicit-signed-integer-truncation] type:*=no_sanitize # ignore literally all types type:short=sanitize # except `short` $ cat bar.c // compile with -fsanitize=implicit-signed-integer-truncation void bar(int toobig) { char a = toobig; // not instrumented short b = toobig; // instrumented } ``` ### Other ways to accomplish the goal of sanitizer allowlisting/whitelisting * ignore list SSCL type support (this PR that you're reading) * [my sanitize-allowlist branch](https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/compare/main...JustinStitt:llvm-project:sanitize-allowlist) - this just implements a sibling flag `-fsanitize-allowlist=`, removing some of the double negative logic present with `skip`/`ignore` when trying to whitelist something. * [Glob Negation](https://discourse.llvm.org/t/rfc-support-globpattern-add-operator-to-invert-matches/80683) - Implement a negation operator to the GlobPattern class so the ignorelist query can use them to simulate allowlisting Please let me know which of the three options we like best. They are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Here's [another related PR](https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/86618) which implements a `wraps` attribute. This can accomplish a similar goal to this PR but requires in-source changes to codebases and also covers a wider variety of integer definedness problems. ### CCs @kees @vitalybuka @bwendling --------- Signed-off-by: Justin Stitt <justinstitt@google.com>

2024-10-03[OpenACC] Implement 'tile' attribute AST (#110999)Erich Keane
The 'tile' clause shares quite a bit of the rules with 'collapse', so a followup patch will add those tests/behaviors. This patch deals with adding the AST node. The 'tile' clause takes a series of integer constant expressions, or *. The asterisk is now represented by a new OpenACCAsteriskSizeExpr node, else this clause is very similar to others.

2024-09-11[HLSL] Allow truncation to scalar (#104844)Chris B
HLSL allows implicit conversions to truncate vectors to scalar pr-values. These conversions are scored as vector truncations and should warn appropriately. This change allows forming a truncation cast to a pr-value, but not an l-value. Truncating a vector to a scalar is performed by loading the first element of the vector and disregarding the remaining elements. Fixes #102964
