2025-08-01[lldb] Ensure that TestMemoryCache.py reads allocated memory (#151635)Igor Kudrin
The test reads 400 bytes of memory above the local variable. If the stack is shallow, this can reach non-allocated space, resulting in a test failure. The patch fixes the issue by reserving enough space in the upper stack frame.

(#143686) This patch factors out the `-e` option logic into two helper functions. The `EvaluateExpression` helper might seem redundant but I'll be adding to it in a follow-up patch to fix an issue when running `memory find -e` for Swift targets. 2024-09-04[lldb] Fix and speedup the `memory find` command (#104193)Pavel Labath
This patch fixes an issue where the `memory find` command would effectively stop searching after encountering a memory read error (which could happen due to unreadable memory), without giving any indication that it has done so (it would just print it could not find the pattern). To make matters worse, it would not terminate after encountering this error, but rather proceed to slowly increment the address pointer, which meant that searching a large region could take a very long time (and give the appearance that lldb is actually searching for the thing). The patch fixes this first problem by detecting read errors and skipping over (using GetMemoryRegionInfo) the unreadable parts of memory and resuming the search after them. It also reads the memory in bulk (`max(sizeof(pattern))`), which speeds up the search significantly (up to 6x for live processes, 18x for core files).
2024-09-03[lldb] Remove limit on max memory read size (#105765)Jason Molenda
`memory read` will return an error if you try to read more than 1k bytes in a single command, instructing you to set `target.max-memory-read-size` or use `--force` if you intended to read more than that. This is a safeguard for a command where people are being explicit about how much memory they would like lldb to read (either to display, or save to a file) and is an annoyance every time you need to read more than a small amount. If someone confuses the --count argument with the start address, lldb may begin dumping gigabytes of data but I'd rather that behavior than requiring everyone to special-case their way around a common use case. I don't want to remove the setting because many people have added (much larger) default max read sizes to their ~/.lldbinit files after hitting this behavior. Another option would be to stop reading/using the value in Target.cpp, but I see no harm in leaving the setting if someone really does prefer to have a small cap on their memory read size.

2024-09-02[lldb/linux] Make truncated reads work (#106532)Pavel Labath
Previously, we were returning an error if we couldn't read the whole region. This doesn't matter most of the time, because lldb caches memory reads, and in that process it aligns them to cache line boundaries. As (LLDB) cache lines are smaller than pages, the reads are unlikely to cross page boundaries. Nonetheless, this can cause a problem for large reads (which bypass the cache), where we're unable to read anything even if just a single byte of the memory is unreadable. This patch fixes the lldb-server to do that, and also changes the linux implementation, to reuse any partial results it got from the process_vm_readv call (to avoid having to re-read everything again using ptrace, only to find that it stopped at the same place). This matches debugserver behavior. It is also consistent with the gdb remote protocol documentation, but -- notably -- not with actual gdbserver behavior (which returns errors instead of partial results). We filed a [clarification bug](https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=24751) several years ago. Though we did not really reach a conclusion there, I think this is the most logical behavior. The associated test does not currently pass on windows, because the windows memory read APIs don't support partial reads (I have a WIP patch to work around that).
2024-08-22[lldb] Change the two remaining SInt64 settings in Target to uint (#105460)Jason Molenda
TargetProperties.td had a few settings listed as signed integral values, but the Target.cpp methods reading those values were reading them as unsigned. e.g. target.max-memory-read-size, some accesses of target.max-children-count, still today, previously target.max-string-summary-length. After Jonas' change to use templates to read these values in https://reviews.llvm.org/D149774, when the code tried to fetch these values, we'd eventually end up calling OptionValue::GetAsUInt64 which checks that the value is actually a UInt64 before returning it; finding that it was an SInt64, it would drop the user setting and return the default value. This manifested as a bug that target.max-memory-read-size is never used for memory read. target.max-children-count is less straightforward, where one read of that setting was fetching it as an int64_t, the other as a uint64_t. I suspect all of these settings were originally marked as SInt64 so a user could do -1 for "infinite", getting it static_cast to a UINT64_MAX value along the way. I can't find any documentation for this behavior, but it seems like something Greg would have done. We've partially lost that behavior already via https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/72233 for target.max-string-summary-length, and this further removes it. We're still fetching UInt64's and returning them as uint32_t's but I'm not overly pressed about someone setting a count/size limit over 4GB. I added a simple API test for the memory read setting limit.

assertEquals is a deprecated alias for assertEqual and has been removed in Python 3.12. This wasn't an issue previously because we used a vendored version of the unittest module. Now that we use the built-in version this gets updated together with the Python version used to run the test suite.

This adds a new command for writing memory tags. It is based on the existing "memory write" command. Syntax: memory tag write <address-expression> <value> [<value> [...]] (where "value" is a tag value) (lldb) memory tag write mte_buf 1 2 (lldb) memory tag read mte_buf mte_buf+32 Logical tag: 0x0 Allocation tags: [0xfffff7ff9000, 0xfffff7ff9010): 0x1 [0xfffff7ff9010, 0xfffff7ff9020): 0x2 The range you are writing to will be calculated by aligning the address down to a granule boundary then adding as many granules as there are tags. (a repeating mode with an end address will be in a follow up patch) This is why "memory tag write" uses MakeTaggedRange but has some extra steps to get this specific behaviour. The command does all the usual argument validation: * Address must evaluate * You must supply at least one tag value (though lldb-server would just treat that as a nop anyway) * Those tag values must be valid for your tagging scheme (e.g. for MTE the value must be > 0 and < 0xf) * The calculated range must be memory tagged That last error will show you the final range, not just the start address you gave the command. (lldb) memory tag write mte_buf_2+page_size-16 6 (lldb) memory tag write mte_buf_2+page_size-16 6 7 error: Address range 0xfffff7ffaff0:0xfffff7ffb010 is not in a memory tagged region (note that we do not check if the region is writeable since lldb can write to it anyway) The read and write tag tests have been merged into a single set of "tag access" tests as their test programs would have been almost identical. 2021-06-25[lldb] Fix memory tag unsupported testDavid Spickett
This corrects the test added in 31f9960c38529ce805edf9764535eb0ce188cadf and temporarily patched in 3b4aad1186e8e8e6f6c7887cb5e8d9bfd7d3ce2f. This test checks that the memory tag read command errors when you use it on a platform without memory tagging. (which is why we skip the test if you actually have MTE) The problem with this test is that there's two levels of unsupported each with it's own specific error. On anything that isn't AArch64, there's no tagging extension we support. So you're told that that is the case. As in "this won't ever work". When you're on AArch64 we know that MTE could be present on the remote and when we find that it isn't, we tell you that instead. Expect a different error message on AArch64 to fix the test.

2020-02-20[lldb] Remove license headers from all test source filesRaphael Isemann
Summary: Around a third of our test sources have LLVM license headers. This patch removes those headers from all test sources and also fixes any tests that depended on the length of the license header. The reasons for this are: * A few tests verify line numbers and will start failing if the number of lines in the LLVM license header changes. Once I landed my patch for valid SourceLocations in debug info we will probably have even more tests that verify line numbers. * No other LLVM project is putting license headers in its test files to my knowledge. * They make the test sources much more verbose than they have to be. Several tests have longer license headers than the actual test source. This patch is just replacing this construct (and similar ones like `assertTrue(a != b, ...)` with the proper call to assertEqual or assertNotEquals.
