2025-07-07[lldb][Formatter] Consolidate libstdc++ and libc++ unique_ptr formatter ↵Michael Buch
tests into generic test (#147031) The libc++ test was a subset of the tests in libstdc++. This test moves the libc++ test into `generic` and somne additional test-cases from `libstdc++` (specifically the recursive unique_ptr case). It turns out the libstdc++ formatter supports dereferencing using the "object" or "obj" names. We could either drop those from the tests or support the same for libc++. I took the latter approach but don't have strong opinions on this. Split out from https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/146740

The only difference is that with libc++ the summary string contains the derefernced pointer value. With libstdc++ we currently display the pointer itself, which seems redundant. E.g., ``` (std::unique_ptr<int>) iup = 0x55555556d2b0 { pointer = 0x000055555556d2b0 } (std::unique_ptr<std::basic_string<char> >) sup = 0x55555556d2d0 { pointer = "foobar" } ``` This patch moves the logic into a common helper that's shared between the libc++ and libstdc++ formatters. After this patch we can combine the libc++ and libstdc++ API tests (see https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/146740).

2025-03-05[lldb] Upgrade CompilerType::GetBitSize to return llvm::Expected (#129601)Adrian Prantl
This patch pushes the error handling boundary for the GetBitSize() methods from Runtime into the Type and CompilerType APIs. This makes it easier to diagnose problems thanks to more meaningful error messages being available. GetBitSize() is often the first thing LLDB asks about a type, so this method is particularly important for a better user experience. rdar://145667239

The vast majority of `SyntheticChildrenFrontEnd` subclasses provide children, and as such implement `MightHaveChildren` with a constant value of `true`. This change makes `true` the default value. With this change, `MightHaveChildren` only needs to be implemented by synthetic providers that can return `false`, which is only 3 subclasses.
2024-10-24[lldb] Move ValueObject into its own library (NFC) (#113393)Jonas Devlieghere
ValueObject is part of lldbCore for historical reasons, but conceptually it deserves to be its own library. This does introduce a (link-time) circular dependency between lldbCore and lldbValueObject, which is unfortunate but probably unavoidable because so many things in LLDB rely on ValueObject. We already have cycles and these libraries are never built as dylibs so while this doesn't improve the situation, it also doesn't make things worse. The header includes were updated with the following command: ``` find . -type f -exec sed -i.bak "s%include \"lldb/Core/ValueObject%include \"lldb/ValueObject/ValueObject%" '{}' \; ```

(#67069) We noticed some performance issue while in lldb-vscode for grabing the name of the SBValue. Profiling shows SBValue::GetName() can cause synthetic children provider of shared/unique_ptr to deference underlying object and complete it type. This patch lazily moves the dereference from synthetic child provider's Update() method to GetChildAtIndex() so that SBValue::GetName() won't trigger the slow code path. `GetChildMemberWithName` does not need a `ConstString`. This change makes the function take a `StringRef` instead, which alleviates the need for callers to construct a `ConstString`. I don't expect this change to improve performance, only ergonomics. This is in support of Alex's effort to replace `ConstString` where appropriate. Summary: A *.cpp file header in LLDB (and in LLDB) should like this: ``` //===-- TestUtilities.cpp -------------------------------------------------===// ``` However in LLDB most of our source files have arbitrary changes to this format and these changes are spreading through LLDB as folks usually just use the existing source files as templates for their new files (most notably the unnecessary editor language indicator `-*- C++ -*-` is spreading and in every review someone is pointing out that this is wrong, resulting in people pointing out that this is done in the same way in other files). This patch removes most of these inconsistencies including the editor language indicators, all the different missing/additional '-' characters, files that center the file name, missing trailing `===//` (mostly caused by clang-format breaking the line). The lifetime of a ValueObject and all its derivative ValueObjects (children, clones, etc.) is managed by a ClusterManager. These objects are only destroyed when every shared pointer to any of the managed objects in the cluster is destroyed. This means that no object in the cluster can store a shared pointer to another object in the cluster without creating a memory leak of the entire cluster. 2019-04-26Allow direct comparison of ConstString against StringRefRaphael Isemann
Summary: When we want to compare a ConstString against a string literal (or any other non-ConstString), we currently have to explicitly turn the other string into a ConstString. This makes sense as comparing ConstStrings against each other is only a fast pointer comparison. However, currently we (rather incorrectly) use in several places in LLDB temporary ConstStrings when we just want to compare a given ConstString against a hardcoded value, for example like this: ``` if (extension != ConstString(".oat") && extension != ConstString(".odex")) ``` Obviously this kind of defeats the point of ConstStrings. In the comparison above we would construct two temporary ConstStrings every time we hit the given code. Constructing a ConstString is relatively expensive: we need to go to the StringPool, take a read and possibly an exclusive write-lock and then look up our temporary string in the string map of the pool. So we do a lot of heavy work for essentially just comparing a <6 characters in two strings. I initially wanted to just fix these issues by turning the temporary ConstString in static variables/ members, but that made the code much less readable. Instead I propose to add a new overload for the ConstString comparison operator that takes a StringRef. This comparison operator directly compares the ConstString content against the given StringRef without turning the StringRef into a ConstString. This means that the example above can look like this now: ``` if (extension != ".oat" && extension != ".odex") ``` It also no longer has to unlock/lock two locks and call multiple functions in other TUs for constructing the temporary ConstString instances. Instead this should end up just being a direct string comparison of the two given strings on most compilers. This patch also directly updates all uses of temporary and short ConstStrings in LLDB to use this new comparison operator. It also adds a some unit tests for the new and old comparison operator. My apologies for the large patch. With the exception of ConstString.h itself it was entirely produced by sed. ConstString has exactly one const char * data member, so passing a ConstString by reference is not any more efficient than copying it by value. In both cases a single pointer is passed. But passing it by value makes it harder to accidentally return the address of a local object. We checked this carefully with the Foundation's lawyer and we believe this is the correct approach. Essentially, all code in the project is now made available by the LLVM project under our new license, so you will see that the license headers include that license only. This renames the LLDB error class to Status, as discussed on the lldb-dev mailing list. A change of this magnitude cannot easily be done without find and replace, but that has potential to catch unwanted occurrences of common strings such as "Error". Every effort was made to find all the obvious things such as the word "Error" appearing in a string, etc, but it's possible there are still some lingering occurences left around. ConstString Error RegularExpression Stream StreamString The goal here is to get lldbUtility into a state where it has no dependendencies except on itself and LLVM, so it can be the starting point at which to start untangling LLDB's dependencies. These are all low level and very widely used classes, and previously lldbUtility had dependencies up to lldbCore in order to use these classes. This is a bit unintuitive as it becomes unobvious that the value actually is a pointer, and we lose the way to actually obtain the pointer value. Change that to print the pointer value instead. The pointee value can still be obtained through the synthetic children.
