2025-10-10[lldb][Expression] Emit a 'Note' diagnostic that indicates the language used ↵Michael Buch
for expression evaluation (#161688) Depends on: * https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/162050 Since it's a 'Note' diagnostic it would only show up when expression evaluation actually failed. This helps with expression evaluation failure reports in mixed language environments where it's not quite clear what language the expression ran as. It may also reduce confusion around why the expression evaluator ran an expression in a language it wasn't asked to run (a softer alternative to what I attempted in https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/156648). Here are some example outputs: ``` # Without target (lldb) expr blah note: Falling back to default language. Ran expression as 'Objective C++'. # Stopped in target (lldb) expr blah note: Ran expression as 'C++14'. (lldb) expr -l objc -- blah note: Expression evaluation in pure Objective-C not supported. Ran expression as 'Objective C++'. (lldb) expr -l c -- blah note: Expression evaluation in pure C not supported. Ran expression as 'ISO C++'. (lldb) expr -l c++14 -- blah note: Ran expression as 'C++14' (lldb) expr -l c++20 -- blah note: Ran expression as 'C++20' (lldb) expr -l objective-c++ -- blah note: Ran expression as 'Objective C++' (lldb) expr -l D -- blah note: Expression evaluation in D not supported. Falling back to default language. Ran expression as 'Objective C++'. ``` I didn't put the diagnostic on the same line as the inline diagnostic for now because of implementation convenience, but if reviewers deem that a blocker I can take a stab at that again. Also, other language plugins (namely Swift), won't immediately benefit from this and will have to emit their own diagnistc. I played around with having a virtual API on `UserExpression` or `ExpressionParser` that will be called consistently, but by the time we're about to parse the expression we are already several frames deep into the plugin. Before (and at the beginning of) the generic `UserExpression::Parse` call we don't have enough information to notify which language we're going to parse in (at least for the C++ plugin). rdar://160297649 rdar://159669244
2024-05-03[lldb] Create a single Severity enum in lldb-enumerations (#90917)Jonas Devlieghere
We have 3 different enums all expressing severity (info, warning, error). Remove all uses with a new Severity enum in lldb-enumerations.h.

StreamFile subclasses Stream (from lldbUtility) and is backed by a File (from lldbHost). It does not depend on anything from lldbCore or any of its sibling libraries, so I think it makes sense for this to live in lldbHost instead. Differential Revision: https://reviews.llvm.org/D157460

2022-11-09Don't try to create Expressions when the process is running.Jim Ingham
We generally prohibit this at a higher level - for instance requiring the process to be stopped for "expr". But when we trigger an expression for internal purposes (e.g. to fetch types from the ObjC runtime) we weren't checking the process state. Now we explicitly check this at the very start of the job so we don't get into bad states. Differential Revision: https://reviews.llvm.org/D137684

caching of resolved/absolute. Resubmission of https://reviews.llvm.org/D130309 with the 2 patches that fixed the linux buildbot, and new windows fixes. The FileSpec APIs allow users to modify instance variables directly by getting a non const reference to the directory and filename instance variables. This makes it impossible to control all of the times the FileSpec object is modified so we can clear cached member variables like m_resolved and with an upcoming patch caching if the file is relative or absolute. This patch modifies the APIs of FileSpec so no one can modify the directory or filename instance variables directly by adding set accessors and by removing the get accessors that are non const. Many clients were using FileSpec::GetCString(...) which returned a unique C string from a ConstString'ified version of the result of GetPath() which returned a std::string. This caused many locations to use this convenient function incorrectly and could cause many strings to be added to the constant string pool that didn't need to. Most clients were converted to using FileSpec::GetPath().c_str() when possible. Other clients were modified to use the newly renamed version of this function which returns an actualy ConstString: ConstString FileSpec::GetPathAsConstString(bool denormalize = true) const; This avoids the issue where people were getting an already uniqued "const char *" that came from a ConstString only to put the "const char *" back into a "ConstString" object. By returning the ConstString instead of a "const char *" clients can be more efficient with the result. The patch: - Removes the non const GetDirectory() and GetFilename() get accessors - Adds set accessors to replace the above functions: SetDirectory() and SetFilename(). - Adds ClearDirectory() and ClearFilename() to replace usage of the FileSpec::GetDirectory().Clear()/FileSpec::GetFilename().Clear() call sites - Fixed all incorrect usage of FileSpec::GetCString() to use FileSpec::GetPath().c_str() where appropriate, and updated other call sites that wanted a ConstString to use the newly returned ConstString appropriately and efficiently. 2021-08-09[lldb] [gdb-remote] Add eOpenOptionReadWrite for future gdb compatMichał Górny
Modify OpenOptions enum to open the future path into synchronizing vFile:open bits with GDB. Currently, LLDB and GDB use different flag models effectively making it impossible to match bits. Notably, LLDB uses two bits to indicate read and write status, and uses union of both for read/write. GDB uses a value of 0 for read-only, 1 for write-only and 2 for read/write. In order to future-proof the code for the GDB variant: 1. Add a distinct eOpenOptionReadWrite constant to be used instead of (eOpenOptionRead | eOpenOptionWrite) when R/W access is required. 2. Rename eOpenOptionRead and eOpenOptionWrite to eOpenOptionReadOnly and eOpenOptionWriteOnly respectively, to make it clear that they do not mean to be combined and require update to all call sites. 3. Use the intersection of all three flags when matching against the three possible values. This commit does not change the actual bits used by LLDB. 2021-02-24[lldb] Support debugging utility functionsJonas Devlieghere
LLDB uses utility functions to run code in the inferior for its own internal purposes, such as reading classes from the Objective-C runtime for example. Because these expressions should be transparent to the user, we ignore breakpoints and unwind the stack on errors, which makes them hard to debug. This patch adds a new setting target.debug-utility-expression that, when enabled, changes these options to facilitate debugging. It enables breakpoints, disables unwinding and writes out the utility function source code to disk so it shows up in the source view. Differential revision: https://reviews.llvm.org/D97249

2020-02-04[lldb] Remove clang classes from lldb-forward.hAlex Langford
Summary: lldb-forward.h is convenient in many ways, but having clang-based class forward declarations in there makes it easy to proliferate uses of clang outside of plugins. 2020-01-28[lldb] Remove ClangASTImporter from TargetAlex Langford
Target is one of the classes responsible for vending ClangASTImporter. 2020-01-24[lldb][NFC] Fix all formatting errors in .cpp file headersRaphael Isemann
Summary: A *.cpp file header in LLDB (and in LLDB) should like this: ``` //===-- TestUtilities.cpp -------------------------------------------------===// ``` However in LLDB most of our source files have arbitrary changes to this format and these changes are spreading through LLDB as folks usually just use the existing source files as templates for their new files (most notably the unnecessary editor language indicator `-*- C++ -*-` is spreading and in every review someone is pointing out that this is wrong, resulting in people pointing out that this is done in the same way in other files). This patch removes most of these inconsistencies including the editor language indicators, all the different missing/additional '-' characters, files that center the file name, missing trailing `===//` (mostly caused by clang-format breaking the line). 2019-04-10[NFC] Remove ASCII lines from commentsJonas Devlieghere
A lot of comments in LLDB are surrounded by an ASCII line to delimit the begging and end of the comment. Its use is not really consistent across the code base, sometimes the lines are longer, sometimes they are shorter and sometimes they are omitted. Furthermore, it looks kind of weird with the 80 column limit, where the comment actually extends past the line, but not by much. Furthermore, when /// is used for Doxygen comments, it looks particularly odd. And when // is used, it incorrectly gives the impression that it's actually a Doxygen comment. I assume these lines were added to improve distinguishing between comments and code. However, given that todays editors and IDEs do a great job at highlighting comments, I think it's worth to drop this for the sake of consistency. The alternative is fixing all the inconsistencies, which would create a lot more churn. Differential revision: https://reviews.llvm.org/D60508 llvm-svn: 358135

2019-02-05[Expressions] Add support of expressions evaluation in some object's contextAleksandr Urakov
Summary: This patch adds support of expression evaluation in a context of some object. Consider the following example: ``` struct S { int a = 11; int b = 12; }; int main() { S s; int a = 1; int b = 2; // We have stopped here return 0; } ``` This patch allows to do something like that: ``` lldb.frame.FindVariable("s").EvaluateExpression("a + b") ``` and the result will be `33` (not `3`) because fields `a` and `b` of `s` will be used (not locals `a` and `b`). This is achieved by replacing of `this` type and object for the expression. This has some limitations: an expression can be evaluated only for values located in the debuggee process memory (they must have an address of `eAddressTypeLoad` type). We checked this carefully with the Foundation's lawyer and we believe this is the correct approach. Essentially, all code in the project is now made available by the LLVM project under our new license, so you will see that the license headers include that license only. Some of our contributors have contributed code under our old license, and accordingly, we have retained a copy of our old license notice in the top-level files in each project and repository. llvm-svn: 351636

*** to conform to clang-format’s LLVM style. This kind of mass change has *** two obvious implications: Firstly, merging this particular commit into a downstream fork may be a huge effort. Alternatively, it may be worth merging all changes up to this commit, performing the same reformatting operation locally, and then discarding the merge for this particular commit. The commands used to accomplish this reformatting were as follows (with current working directory as the root of the repository): find . \( -iname "*.c" -or -iname "*.cpp" -or -iname "*.h" -or -iname "*.mm" \) -exec clang-format -i {} + find . -iname "*.py" -exec autopep8 --in-place --aggressive --aggressive {} + ; The version of clang-format used was 3.9.0, and autopep8 was 1.2.4. There are alternatives available that will attempt to look through this change and find the appropriate prior commit. YMMV. llvm-svn: 280751

2016-03-19Add a DiagnosticManager replace error streams in the expression parser.Sean Callanan
We want to do a better job presenting errors that occur when evaluating expressions. Key to this effort is getting away from a model where all errors are spat out onto a stream where the client has to take or leave all of them. To this end, this patch adds a new class, DiagnosticManager, which contains errors produced by the compiler or by LLDB as an expression is created. The DiagnosticManager can dump itself to a log as well as to a string. Clients will (in the future) be able to filter out the errors they're interested in by ID or present subsets of these errors to the user. This patch is not intended to change the *users* of errors - only to thread DiagnosticManagers to all the places where streams are used. I also attempt to standardize our use of errors a bit, removing trailing newlines and making clients omit 'error:', 'warning:' etc. and instead pass the Severity flag. The patch is testsuite-neutral, with modifications to one part of the MI tests because it relied on "error: error:" being erroneously printed. This patch fixes the MI variable handling and the testcase. <rdar://problem/22864976> llvm-svn: 263859
2015-10-03Add PersistentVariableDelegate to handle language-specific dematerialization.Sean Callanan
The concept here is that languages may have different ways of communicating results. In particular, languages may have different names for their result variables and in fact may have multiple types of result variables (e.g., error results). Materializer was tied to one specific model of result handling. Instead, now UserExpressions can register their own handlers for the result variables they inject. This allows language-specific code in Materializer to be moved into the expression parser plug-in, and it simplifies Materializer. These delegates are subclasses of PersistentVariableDelegate. PersistentVariableDelegate can provide the name of the result variable, and is notified when the result variable is populated. It can also be used to touch persistent variables if need be, updating language-specific state. The UserExpression owns the delegate and can decide on its result based on consulting all of its (potentially multiple) delegates. The user expression itself now makes the determination of what the final result of the expression is, rather than relying on the Materializer, and I've added a virtual function to UserExpression to allow this. llvm-svn: 249233
