2025-08-09[clang] Improve nested name specifier AST representation (#147835)Matheus Izvekov
This is a major change on how we represent nested name qualifications in the AST. * The nested name specifier itself and how it's stored is changed. The prefixes for types are handled within the type hierarchy, which makes canonicalization for them super cheap, no memory allocation required. Also translating a type into nested name specifier form becomes a no-op. An identifier is stored as a DependentNameType. The nested name specifier gains a lightweight handle class, to be used instead of passing around pointers, which is similar to what is implemented for TemplateName. There is still one free bit available, and this handle can be used within a PointerUnion and PointerIntPair, which should keep bit-packing aficionados happy. * The ElaboratedType node is removed, all type nodes in which it could previously apply to can now store the elaborated keyword and name qualifier, tail allocating when present. * TagTypes can now point to the exact declaration found when producing these, as opposed to the previous situation of there only existing one TagType per entity. This increases the amount of type sugar retained, and can have several applications, for example in tracking module ownership, and other tools which care about source file origins, such as IWYU. These TagTypes are lazily allocated, in order to limit the increase in AST size. This patch offers a great performance benefit. It greatly improves compilation time for [stdexec](https://github.com/NVIDIA/stdexec). For one datapoint, for `test_on2.cpp` in that project, which is the slowest compiling test, this patch improves `-c` compilation time by about 7.2%, with the `-fsyntax-only` improvement being at ~12%. This has great results on compile-time-tracker as well: ![image](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/700dce98-2cab-4aa8-97d1-b038c0bee831) This patch also further enables other optimziations in the future, and will reduce the performance impact of template specialization resugaring when that lands. It has some other miscelaneous drive-by fixes. About the review: Yes the patch is huge, sorry about that. Part of the reason is that I started by the nested name specifier part, before the ElaboratedType part, but that had a huge performance downside, as ElaboratedType is a big performance hog. I didn't have the steam to go back and change the patch after the fact. There is also a lot of internal API changes, and it made sense to remove ElaboratedType in one go, versus removing it from one type at a time, as that would present much more churn to the users. Also, the nested name specifier having a different API avoids missing changes related to how prefixes work now, which could make existing code compile but not work. How to review: The important changes are all in `clang/include/clang/AST` and `clang/lib/AST`, with also important changes in `clang/lib/Sema/TreeTransform.h`. The rest and bulk of the changes are mostly consequences of the changes in API. PS: TagType::getDecl is renamed to `getOriginalDecl` in this patch, just for easier to rebasing. I plan to rename it back after this lands. 2022-12-04[lldb] Use std::nullopt instead of None (NFC)Kazu Hirata

2022-11-16Make CompilerType safeAdrian Prantl
When a process gets restarted TypeSystem objects associated with it may get deleted, and any CompilerType objects holding on to a reference to that type system are a use-after-free in waiting. Because of the SBAPI, we don't have tight control over where CompilerTypes go and when they are used. This is particularly a problem in the Swift plugin, where the scratch TypeSystem can be restarted while the process is still running. The Swift plugin has a lock to prevent abuse, but where there's a lock there can be bugs. This patch changes CompilerType to store a std::weak_ptr<TypeSystem>. Most of the std::weak_ptr<TypeSystem>* uglyness is hidden by introducing a wrapper class CompilerType::WrappedTypeSystem that has a dyn_cast_or_null() method. The only sites that need to know about the weak pointer implementation detail are the ones that deal with creating TypeSystems. rdar://101505232 Differential Revision: https://reviews.llvm.org/D136650
2021-05-24[lldb] Move ClangModulesDeclVendor ownership to ClangPersistentVariables ↵Alex Langford

2020-03-23Internal expressions shouldn't increment the result variable numbering.Jim Ingham

2020-02-04[lldb] Remove clang classes from lldb-forward.hAlex Langford
Summary: lldb-forward.h is convenient in many ways, but having clang-based class forward declarations in there makes it easy to proliferate uses of clang outside of plugins. Removing them makes you much more conscious of when you're using something from clang and marks where we're using things from clang in non-plugins. 2020-01-31[lldb] Move clang-based files out of SymbolAlex Langford
Summary: This change represents the move of ClangASTImporter, ClangASTMetadata, ClangExternalASTSourceCallbacks, ClangUtil, CxxModuleHandler, and TypeSystemClang from lldbSource to lldbPluginExpressionParserClang.h This explicitly removes knowledge of clang internals from lldbSymbol, moving towards a more generic core implementation of lldb. 2020-01-28[lldb] Remove ClangASTImporter from TargetAlex Langford
Target is one of the classes responsible for vending ClangASTImporter. Target doesn't need to know anything about ClangASTImporter, so if we instead have ClangPersistentVariables vend it, we can preserve existing behavior while improving layering and removing dependencies from non-plugins to plugins.
2020-01-24[lldb][NFC] Fix all formatting errors in .cpp file headersRaphael Isemann
Summary: A *.cpp file header in LLDB (and in LLDB) should like this: ``` //===-- TestUtilities.cpp -------------------------------------------------===// ``` However in LLDB most of our source files have arbitrary changes to this format and these changes are spreading through LLDB as folks usually just use the existing source files as templates for their new files (most notably the unnecessary editor language indicator `-*- C++ -*-` is spreading and in every review someone is pointing out that this is wrong, resulting in people pointing out that this is done in the same way in other files). This patch removes most of these inconsistencies including the editor language indicators, all the different missing/additional '-' characters, files that center the file name, missing trailing `===//` (mostly caused by clang-format breaking the line). 2020-01-23[lldb][NFC] Rename ClangASTContext to TypeSystemClangRaphael Isemann
Summary: This commit renames ClangASTContext to TypeSystemClang to better reflect what this class is actually supposed to do (implement the TypeSystem interface for Clang). It also gets rid of the very confusing situation that we have both a `clang::ASTContext` and a `ClangASTContext` in clang (which sometimes causes Clang people to think I'm fiddling with Clang's ASTContext when I'm actually just doing LLDB work). I also have plans to potentially have multiple clang::ASTContext instances associated with one ClangASTContext so the ASTContext naming will then become even more confusing to people. 2020-01-01[lldb][NFC] Simplify CompilerType constructors/destructors and fix unused ↵Raphael Isemann
variable warning CompilerType has no virtual functions and no statements in its constructors, so we can simplify this code. This also allows Clang to emit unused variable warnings for CompilerType, so I also removed one unused variable that otherwise causes -Werror builds to fail.
2019-12-28[lldb][NFC] Remove GetASTContext call in ClangPersistentVariablesRaphael Isemann
We try to build a CompilerType from the persistent decls so we need a ClangASTContext. With this patch the ClangPersistentVariables store the associated ClangASTContext of the persistent decls (which is always the scratch ClangASTContext) and no longer call GetASTContext to map back from clang::ASTContext to ClangASTContext.

2019-06-12[Expression] Add PersistentExpressionState::GetCompilerTypeFromPersistentDeclAlex Langford
Summary: PersistentStateExpressions (e.g. ClangPersistentVariables) have the ability to define types using expressions that persist throughout the debugging session. GetCompilerTypeFromPersistentDecl is a useful operation to have if you need to use any of those persistently declared types, like in CommandObjectMemory. This decouples clang from CommandObjectMemory and decouples Plugins from Commands in general. Differential Revision: https://reviews.llvm.org/D62797 llvm-svn: 363183
2019-05-23[lldb] NFC modernize codebase with modernize-use-nullptrKonrad Kleine
Summary: NFC = [[ https://llvm.org/docs/Lexicon.html#nfc | Non functional change ]] This commit is the result of modernizing the LLDB codebase by using `nullptr` instread of `0` or `NULL`. See https://clang.llvm.org/extra/clang-tidy/checks/modernize-use-nullptr.html for more information. This is the command I ran and I to fix and format the code base: ``` run-clang-tidy.py \ -header-filter='.*' \ -checks='-*,modernize-use-nullptr' \ -fix ~/dev/llvm-project/lldb/.* \ -format \ -style LLVM \ -p ~/llvm-builds/debug-ninja-gcc ``` NOTE: There were also changes to `llvm/utils/unittest` but I did not include them because I felt that maybe this library shall be updated in isolation somehow. NOTE: I know this is a rather large commit but it is a nobrainer in most parts. 2019-03-06Pass ConstString by value (NFC)Adrian Prantl
My apologies for the large patch. With the exception of ConstString.h itself it was entirely produced by sed. ConstString has exactly one const char * data member, so passing a ConstString by reference is not any more efficient than copying it by value. In both cases a single pointer is passed. But passing it by value makes it harder to accidentally return the address of a local object. 2019-01-19Update the file headers across all of the LLVM projects in the monorepoChandler Carruth
to reflect the new license. We understand that people may be surprised that we're moving the header entirely to discuss the new license. We checked this carefully with the Foundation's lawyer and we believe this is the correct approach. Essentially, all code in the project is now made available by the LLVM project under our new license, so you will see that the license headers include that license only. Some of our contributors have contributed code under our old license, and accordingly, we have retained a copy of our old license notice in the top-level files in each project and repository. llvm-svn: 351636
2018-04-30Refactor GetNextPersistentVariableName into a non-virtual methodAdrian Prantl

2018-04-30Move the persistent variable counter into TargetAdrian Prantl
so it can be shared across multiple language plugins. 2017-02-02Move classes from Core -> Utility.Zachary Turner
This moves the following classes from Core -> Utility. ConstString Error RegularExpression Stream StreamString The goal here is to get lldbUtility into a state where it has no dependendencies except on itself and LLVM, so it can be the starting point at which to start untangling LLDB's dependencies. These are all low level and very widely used classes, and previously lldbUtility had dependencies up to lldbCore in order to use these classes. So moving then down to lldbUtility makes sense from both the short term and long term perspective in solving this problem. Differential Revision: https://reviews.llvm.org/D29427 llvm-svn: 293941
2016-09-06*** This commit represents a complete reformatting of the LLDB source codeKate Stone
*** to conform to clang-format’s LLVM style. This kind of mass change has *** two obvious implications: Firstly, merging this particular commit into a downstream fork may be a huge effort. Alternatively, it may be worth merging all changes up to this commit, performing the same reformatting operation locally, and then discarding the merge for this particular commit. The commands used to accomplish this reformatting were as follows (with current working directory as the root of the repository): find . \( -iname "*.c" -or -iname "*.cpp" -or -iname "*.h" -or -iname "*.mm" \) -exec clang-format -i {} + find . -iname "*.py" -exec autopep8 --in-place --aggressive --aggressive {} + ; The version of clang-format used was 3.9.0, and autopep8 was 1.2.4. Secondly, “blame” style tools will generally point to this commit instead of a meaningful prior commit. There are alternatives available that will attempt to look through this change and find the appropriate prior commit. YMMV. llvm-svn: 280751
2016-03-19Handle any persistent Decl in the Clang expression parser, not just types.Sean Callanan
Persistent decls have traditionally only been types. However, we want to be able to persist more things, like functions and global variables. This changes some of the nomenclature and the lookup rules to make this possible. <rdar://problem/22864976> llvm-svn: 263864
2015-10-01Eliminated redundant "constructors" for ClangExpressionVariable. ↵Sean Callanan
The ClangExpressionVariable::CreateVariableInList functions looked cute, but caused more confusion than they solved. I removed them, and instead made sure that there are adequate facilities for easily adding newly-constructed ExpressionVariables to lists. I also made some of the constructors that are common be generic, so that it's possible to construct expression variables from generic places (like the ABI and ValueObject) without having to know the specifics about the class. llvm-svn: 249095
2015-09-30Now persistent expression data no longer lives with the Target, but rather withSean Callanan
the corresponding TypeSystem. This makes sense because what kind of data there is -- and how it can be looked up -- depends on the language. Functionality that is common to all type systems is factored out into PersistentExpressionState. llvm-svn: 248934
2015-09-25Moved more Clang-specific parts of the expression parser into the Clang plugin.Sean Callanan
There are still a bunch of dependencies on the plug-in, but this helps to identify them. There are also a few more bits we need to move (and abstract, for example the ClangPersistentVariables). llvm-svn: 248612
