2025-11-13Reland [MS][clang] Add support for vector deleting destructors (#165598)Mariya Podchishchaeva
MSVC supports an extension allowing to delete an array of objects via pointer whose static type doesn't match its dynamic type. This is done via generation of special destructors - vector deleting destructors. MSVC's virtual tables always contain a pointer to the vector deleting destructor for classes with virtual destructors, so not having this extension implemented causes clang to generate code that is not compatible with the code generated by MSVC, because clang always puts a pointer to a scalar deleting destructor to the vtable. As a bonus the deletion of an array of polymorphic object will work just like it does with MSVC - no memory leaks and correct destructors are called. This patch will cause clang to emit code that is compatible with code produced by MSVC but not compatible with code produced with clang of older versions, so the new behavior can be disabled via passing -fclang-abi-compat=21 (or lower). This is yet another attempt to land vector deleting destructors support originally implemented by https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/133451. This PR contains fixes for issues reported in the original PR as well as fixes for issues related to operator delete[] search reported in several issues like https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/133950#issuecomment-2787510484 https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/134265 Fixes https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/19772

2025-08-09[clang] Improve nested name specifier AST representation (#147835)Matheus Izvekov
This is a major change on how we represent nested name qualifications in the AST. * The nested name specifier itself and how it's stored is changed. The prefixes for types are handled within the type hierarchy, which makes canonicalization for them super cheap, no memory allocation required. Also translating a type into nested name specifier form becomes a no-op. An identifier is stored as a DependentNameType. The nested name specifier gains a lightweight handle class, to be used instead of passing around pointers, which is similar to what is implemented for TemplateName. There is still one free bit available, and this handle can be used within a PointerUnion and PointerIntPair, which should keep bit-packing aficionados happy. * The ElaboratedType node is removed, all type nodes in which it could previously apply to can now store the elaborated keyword and name qualifier, tail allocating when present. * TagTypes can now point to the exact declaration found when producing these, as opposed to the previous situation of there only existing one TagType per entity. This increases the amount of type sugar retained, and can have several applications, for example in tracking module ownership, and other tools which care about source file origins, such as IWYU. These TagTypes are lazily allocated, in order to limit the increase in AST size. This patch offers a great performance benefit. It greatly improves compilation time for [stdexec](https://github.com/NVIDIA/stdexec). For one datapoint, for `test_on2.cpp` in that project, which is the slowest compiling test, this patch improves `-c` compilation time by about 7.2%, with the `-fsyntax-only` improvement being at ~12%. This has great results on compile-time-tracker as well: ![image](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/700dce98-2cab-4aa8-97d1-b038c0bee831) This patch also further enables other optimziations in the future, and will reduce the performance impact of template specialization resugaring when that lands. It has some other miscelaneous drive-by fixes. About the review: Yes the patch is huge, sorry about that. Part of the reason is that I started by the nested name specifier part, before the ElaboratedType part, but that had a huge performance downside, as ElaboratedType is a big performance hog. I didn't have the steam to go back and change the patch after the fact. There is also a lot of internal API changes, and it made sense to remove ElaboratedType in one go, versus removing it from one type at a time, as that would present much more churn to the users. Also, the nested name specifier having a different API avoids missing changes related to how prefixes work now, which could make existing code compile but not work. How to review: The important changes are all in `clang/include/clang/AST` and `clang/lib/AST`, with also important changes in `clang/lib/Sema/TreeTransform.h`. The rest and bulk of the changes are mostly consequences of the changes in API. PS: TagType::getDecl is renamed to `getOriginalDecl` in this patch, just for easier to rebasing. I plan to rename it back after this lands. Whereas it is UB in terms of the standard to delete an array of objects via pointer whose static type doesn't match its dynamic type, MSVC supports an extension allowing to do it. Aside from array deletion not working correctly in the mentioned case, currently not having this extension implemented causes clang to generate code that is not compatible with the code generated by MSVC, because clang always puts scalar deleting destructor to the vftable. This PR aims to resolve these problems. It was reverted due to link time errors in chromium with sanitizer coverage enabled, which is fixed by https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/131929 . The second commit of this PR also contains a fix for a runtime failure in chromium reported in https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/126240#issuecomment-2730216384 . to authenticate signed pointers (#86923) To authenticate pointers, CodeGen needs access to the key and discriminators that were used to sign the pointer. That information is sometimes known from the context, but not always, which is why `Address` needs to hold that information. This patch adds methods and data members to `Address`, which will be needed in subsequent patches to authenticate signed pointers, and uses the newly added methods throughout CodeGen. Although this patch isn't strictly NFC as it causes CodeGen to use different code paths in some cases (e.g., `mergeAddressesInConditionalExpr`), it doesn't cause any changes in functionality as it doesn't add any information needed for authentication. In addition to the changes mentioned above, this patch introduces class `RawAddress`, which contains a pointer that we know is unsigned, and adds several new functions for creating `Address` and `LValue` objects. This reapplies d9a685a9dd589486e882b722e513ee7b8c84870c, which was reverted because it broke ubsan bots. There seems to be a bug in coroutine code-gen, which is causing EmitTypeCheck to use the wrong alignment. For now, pass alignment zero to EmitTypeCheck so that it can compute the correct alignment based on the passed type (see function EmitCXXMemberOrOperatorMemberCallExpr).

2022-01-13[MS] Implement on-demand TLS initialization for Microsoft CXX ABIMaurice Heumann
TLS initializers, for example constructors of thread-local variables, don't necessarily get called. If a thread was created before a module is loaded, the module's TLS initializers are not executed for this particular thread. This is why Microsoft added support for dynamic TLS initialization. Before every use of thread-local variables, a check is added that runs the module's TLS initializers on-demand. To do this, the method `__dyn_tls_on_demand_init` gets called. Internally, it simply calls `__dyn_tls_init`. No additional TLS initializer that sets the guard needs to be emitted, as the guard always gets set by `__dyn_tls_init`. The guard is also checked again within `__dyn_tls_init`. This makes our check redundant, however, as Microsoft's compiler also emits this check, the behaviour is adopted here. Summary: Previously we tried too hard to uphold the fiction that destructor variants work like they do on Itanium throughout the ABI-neutral parts of clang. This lead to MS C++ ABI incompatiblities and other bugs. Now, -mconstructor-aliases will no longer control this ABI detail, and clang -cc1's LLVM IR output will be this much closer to the clang driver's. Based on a patch by Zahira Ammarguellat: https://reviews.llvm.org/D39063 I've tried to move the logic that Zahira added into MicrosoftCXXABI.cpp. There is only one ABI-specific detail sticking out, and that is in CodeGenModule::getAddrOfCXXStructor, where we collapse complete dtors to base dtors in the MS ABI. 2017-11-16[MS] Apply adjustments after storing 'this'Reid Kleckner
Summary: The MS ABI convention is that the 'this' pointer on entry is the address of the vfptr that was used to make the virtual method call. In other words, the pointer on entry always points to the base subobject that introduced the virtual method. Consider this hierarchy: struct A { virtual void f() = 0; }; struct B { virtual void g() = 0; }; struct C : A, B { void f() override; void g() override; }; On entry to C::g, [ER]CX will contain the address of C's B subobject, and C::g will have to subtract sizeof(A) to recover a pointer to C. Before this change, we applied this adjustment in the prologue and stored the new value into the "this" local variable alloca used for debug info. However, MSVC does not do this, presumably because it is often profitable to fold the adjustment into later field accesses. This creates a problem, because the debugger expects the variable to be unadjusted. Unfortunately, CodeView doesn't have anything like DWARF expressions for computing variables that aren't in the program anymore, so we have to declare 'this' to be the unadjusted value if we want the debugger to see the right value. This has the side benefit that, in optimized builds, the 'this' pointer will usually be available on function entry because it doesn't require any adjustment. This fixes ABI differences between Clang and GCC: * Previously, Clang ignored the move constructor when making this determination. It now takes the move constructor into account, per https://github.com/itanium-cxx-abi/cxx-abi/pull/17 (this change may seem recent, but the ABI change was agreed on the Itanium C++ ABI list a long time ago). * Previously, Clang's behavior when the copy constructor was deleted was unstable -- depending on whether the lazy declaration of the copy constructor had been triggered, you might get different behavior. We now eagerly declare the copy constructor whenever its deletedness is unclear, and ignore deleted copy/move constructors when looking for a trivial such constructor. This also fixes an ABI difference between Clang and MSVC: * If the copy constructor would be implicitly deleted (but has not been lazily declared yet), for instance because the class has an rvalue reference member, we would pass it directly. We now pass such a class indirectly, matching MSVC. Based on a patch by Vassil Vassilev, which was based on a patch by Bernd Schmidt, which was based on a patch by Reid Kleckner! This is a re-commit of r310401, which was reverted in r310464 due to ARM failures (which should now be fixed). llvm-svn: 310983

Certain CXXConstructExpr nodes require zero-initialization before a constructor is called. We had a bug in the case where the constructor is called on a virtual base: we zero-initialized the base's vbptr field.
