2025-03-06[IR] Store Triple in Module (NFC) (#129868)Nikita Popov
The module currently stores the target triple as a string. This means that any code that wants to actually use the triple first has to instantiate a Triple, which is somewhat expensive. The change in #121652 caused a moderate compile-time regression due to this. While it would be easy enough to work around, I think that architecturally, it makes more sense to store the parsed Triple in the module, so that it can always be directly queried. For this change, I've opted not to add any magic conversions between std::string and Triple for backwards-compatibilty purses, and instead write out needed Triple()s or str()s explicitly. This is because I think a decent number of them should be changed to work on Triple as well, to avoid unnecessary conversions back and forth. The only interesting part in this patch is that the default triple is Triple("") instead of Triple() to preserve existing behavior. The former defaults to using the ELF object format instead of unknown object format. We should fix that as well.

2024-04-23IRSymTab: Record _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_ for ELF x86Fangrui Song
In ELF, relocatable files generated for x86-32 and some code models of x86-64 (medium, large) may reference the special symbol `_GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_` that is not used in the IR. In an LTO link, if there is no regular relocatable file referencing the special symbol, the linker may not define the symbol and lead to a spurious "undefined symbol" error. Fix #61101: record that `_GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_` is used in the IR symbol table. Note: The `PreservedSymbols` mechanism (https://reviews.llvm.org/D112595) that just sets `FB_used` is not applicable. The `getRuntimeLibcallSymbols` for extracting lazy runtime library symbols is for symbols that are "always" potentially used, but linkers don't have the code model information to make a precise decision. 2023-12-18[LTO] Improve diagnostics handling when parsing module-level inline assembly ↵Fangrui Song
(#75726) Non-LTO compiles set the buffer name to "<inline asm>" (`AsmPrinter::addInlineAsmDiagBuffer`) and pass diagnostics to `ClangDiagnosticHandler` (through the `MCContext` handler in `MachineModuleInfoWrapperPass::doInitialization`) to ensure that the exit code is 1 in the presence of errors. In contrast, LTO compiles spuriously succeed even if error messages are printed. ``` % cat a.c void _start() {} asm("unknown instruction"); % clang -c a.c <inline asm>:1:1: error: invalid instruction mnemonic 'unknown' 1 | unknown instruction | ^ 1 error generated. % clang -c -flto a.c; echo $? # -flto=thin is the same error: invalid instruction mnemonic 'unknown' unknown instruction ^~~~~~~ error: invalid instruction mnemonic 'unknown' unknown instruction ^~~~~~~ 0 ``` `CollectAsmSymbols` parses inline assembly and is transitively called by both `ModuleSummaryIndexAnalysis::run` and `WriteBitcodeToFile`, leading to duplicate diagnostics. This patch updates `CollectAsmSymbols` to be similar to non-LTO compiles. ``` % clang -c -flto=thin a.c; echo $? <inline asm>:1:1: error: invalid instruction mnemonic 'unknown' 1 | unknown instruction | ^ 1 errors generated. 1 ``` The `HasErrors` check does not prevent duplicate warnings but assembler warnings are very uncommon.

2021-10-20[IR] Refactor GlobalIFunc to inherit from GlobalObject, Remove ↵Itay Bookstein
GlobalIndirectSymbol As discussed in: * https://reviews.llvm.org/D94166 * https://lists.llvm.org/pipermail/llvm-dev/2020-September/145031.html The GlobalIndirectSymbol class lost most of its meaning in https://reviews.llvm.org/D109792, which disambiguated getBaseObject (now getAliaseeObject) between GlobalIFunc and everything else. In addition, as long as GlobalIFunc is not a GlobalObject and getAliaseeObject returns GlobalObjects, a GlobalAlias whose aliasee is a GlobalIFunc cannot currently be modeled properly. Creating aliases for GlobalIFuncs does happen in the wild (e.g. glibc). In addition, calling getAliaseeObject on a GlobalIFunc will currently return nullptr, which is undesirable because it should return the object itself for non-aliases. This patch refactors the GlobalIFunc class to inherit directly from GlobalObject, and removes GlobalIndirectSymbol (while inlining the relevant parts into GlobalAlias and GlobalIFunc). This allows for calling getAliaseeObject() on a GlobalIFunc to return the GlobalIFunc itself, making getAliaseeObject() more consistent and enabling alias-to-ifunc to be properly modeled in the IR. I exercised some judgement in the API clients of GlobalIndirectSymbol: some were 'monomorphized' for GlobalAlias and GlobalIFunc, and some remained shared (with the type adapted to become GlobalValue). 2021-10-08Move TargetRegistry.(h|cpp) from Support to MCReid Kleckner

2021-10-06[IR][NFC] Rename getBaseObject to getAliaseeObjectItay Bookstein

2021-09-23Resolve {GlobalValue,GloalIndirectSymol}::getBaseObject confusionFangrui Song
While both GlobalAlias and GlobalIFunc are GlobalIndirectSymbol, their `getIndirectSymbol()` usage is quite different (GlobalIFunc's resolver is an entity different from GlobalIFunc itself). As discussed on https://lists.llvm.org/pipermail/llvm-dev/2020-September/144904.html ("[IR] Modelling of GlobalIFunc"), the name `getBaseObject` is confusing when used with GlobalIFunc. To resolve the confusion: * Move GloalIndirectSymol::getBaseObject to GlobalAlias:: (GlobalIFunc should use `getResolver` instead) * Change GlobalValue::getBaseObject not to inspect GlobalIFunc. Note: the function has 7 references. * Add GlobalIFunc::getResolverFunction to peel off potential ConstantExpr indirection (`strlen` in `test/LTO/Resolution/X86/ifunc.ll`) Note: GlobalIFunc::getResolver (like GlobalAlias::getAliasee which does not peel off ConstantExpr indirection) is kept to be used by ValueEnumerator. 2021-05-05[MC] Untangle MCContext and MCObjectFileInfoPhilipp Krones
This untangles the MCContext and the MCObjectFileInfo. There is a circular dependency between MCContext and MCObjectFileInfo. Currently this dependency also exists during construction: You can't contruct a MOFI without a MCContext without constructing the MCContext with a dummy version of that MOFI first. This removes this dependency during construction. In a perfect world, MCObjectFileInfo wouldn't depend on MCContext at all, but only be stored in the MCContext, like other MC information. This is future work. This also shifts/adds more information to the MCContext making it more available to the different targets. 2020-07-01[ThinLTO] Always parse module level inline asm with At&t dialect (PR46503)Hans Wennborg
clang-cl passes -x86-asm-syntax=intel to the cc1 invocation so that assembly listings produced by the /FA flag are printed in Intel dialect. That flag however should not affect the *parsing* of inline assembly in the program. (See r322652) When compiling normally, AsmPrinter::emitInlineAsm is used for assembling and defaults to At&t dialect. However, when compiling for ThinLTO, the code which parses module level inline asm to find symbols for the symbol table was failing to set the dialect. This patch fixes that. 2019-01-19Update the file headers across all of the LLVM projects in the monorepoChandler Carruth

We checked this carefully with the Foundation's lawyer and we believe this is the correct approach. Essentially, all code in the project is now made available by the LLVM project under our new license, so you will see that the license headers include that license only. Some of our contributors have contributed code under our old license, and accordingly, we have retained a copy of our old license notice in the top-level files in each project and repository. llvm-svn: 351636
2018-12-14[macho] save the SDK version stored in module metadata into the version min andAlex Lorenz
build version load commands in the object file This commit introduces a new metadata node called "SDK Version". It will be set by the frontend to mark the platform SDK (macOS/iOS/etc) version which was used during that particular compilation. This node is used when machine code is emitted, by either saving the SDK version into the appropriate macho load command (version min/build version), or by emitting the assembly for these load commands with the SDK version specified as well. The assembly for both load commands is extended by allowing it to contain the sdk_version X, Y [, Z] trailing directive to represent the SDK version respectively. rdar://45774000 Differential Revision: https://reviews.llvm.org/D55612 llvm-svn: 349119

2017-08-02Don't pass the code model to MCRafael Espindola
I was surprised to see the code model being passed to MC. After all, it assembles code, it doesn't create it. The one place it is used is in the expansion of .cfi directives to handle .eh_frame being more that 2gb away from the code. As far as I can tell, gnu assembler doesn't even have an option to enable this. Compiling a c file with gcc -mcmodel=large produces a regular looking .eh_frame. This is probably because in practice linker parse and recreate .eh_frames. In llvm this is used because the JIT can place the code and .eh_frame very far apart. Ideally we would fix the jit and delete this option. This is hard. Apart from confusion another problem with the current interface is that most callers pass CodeModel::Default, which is bad since MC has no way to map it to the target default if it actually needed to. This patch then replaces the argument with a boolean with a default value. The vast majority of users don't ever need to look at it. In fact, only CodeGen and llvm-mc use it and llvm-mc just to enable more testing. llvm-svn: 309884
2017-06-06Sort the remaining #include lines in include/... and lib/....Chandler Carruth
I did this a long time ago with a janky python script, but now clang-format has built-in support for this. I fed clang-format every line with a #include and let it re-sort things according to the precise LLVM rules for include ordering baked into clang-format these days. I've reverted a number of files where the results of sorting includes isn't healthy. Either places where we have legacy code relying on particular include ordering (where possible, I'll fix these separately) or where we have particular formatting around #include lines that I didn't want to disturb in this patch. This patch is *entirely* mechanical. If you get merge conflicts or anything, just ignore the changes in this patch and run clang-format over your #include lines in the files. Sorry for any noise here, but it is important to keep these things stable. I was seeing an increasing number of patches with irrelevant re-ordering of #include lines because clang-format was used. This patch at least isolates that churn, makes it easy to skip when resolving conflicts, and gets us to a clean baseline (again). llvm-svn: 304787

2017-03-09Perform symbol binding for .symver versioned symbolsTeresa Johnson
Summary: In a .symver assembler directive like: .symver name, name2@@nodename "name2@@nodename" should get the same symbol binding as "name". While the ELF object writer is updating the symbol binding for .symver aliases before emitting the object file, not doing so when the module inline assembly is handled by the RecordStreamer is causing the wrong behavior in *LTO mode. E.g. when "name" is global, "name2@@nodename" must also be marked as global. Otherwise, the symbol is skipped when iterating over the LTO InputFile symbols (InputFile::Symbol::shouldSkip). So, for example, when performing any *LTO via the gold-plugin, the versioned symbol definition is not recorded by the plugin and passed back to the linker. If the object was in an archive, and there were no other symbols needed from that object, the object would not be included in the final link and references to the versioned symbol are undefined. The llvm-lto2 tests added will give an error about an unused symbol resolution without the fix.
