2025-05-22[KeyInstr][Clang] Aggregate init + copy (#134639)Orlando Cazalet-Hyams
This patch is part of a stack that teaches Clang to generate Key Instructions metadata for C and C++. RFC: https://discourse.llvm.org/t/rfc-improving-is-stmt-placement-for-better-interactive-debugging/82668 The feature is only functional in LLVM if LLVM is built with CMake flag LLVM_EXPERIMENTAL_KEY_INSTRUCTIONs. Eventually that flag will be removed.

2025-02-27[clang][CodeGen] Additional fixes for #114062 (#128166)Alex Voicu
This addresses two issues introduced by moving indirect args into an explicit AS (please see <https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/114062#issuecomment-2659829790> and <https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/114062#issuecomment-2661158477>): 1. Unconditionally stripping casts from a pre-allocated return slot was incorrect / insufficient (this is illustrated by the `amdgcn_sret_ctor.cpp` test); 2. Putting compiler manufactured sret args in a non default AS can lead to a C-cast (surprisingly) requiring an AS cast (this is illustrated by the `sret_cast_with_nonzero_alloca_as.cpp test). The way we handle (2), by subverting CK_BitCast emission iff a sret arg is involved, is quite naff, but I couldn't think of any other way to use a non default indirect AS and make this case work (hopefully this is a failure of imagination on my part).
2025-02-15[HLSL] Implement HLSL intialization list support (#123141)Chris B
This PR implements HLSL's initialization list behvaior as specified in the draft language specifcation under [*Decl.Init.Agg*](https://microsoft.github.io/hlsl-specs/specs/hlsl.html#Decl.Init.Agg). This behavior is a bit unusual for C/C++ because intermediate braces in initializer lists are ignored and a whole array of additional conversions occur unintuitively to how initializaiton works in C. The implementaiton in this PR generates a valid C/C++ initialization list AST for the HLSL initializer so that there are no changes required to Clang's CodeGen to support this. This design will also allow us to use Clang's rewrite to convert HLSL initializers to valid C/C++ initializers that are equivalent. It does have the downside that it will generate often redundant accesses during codegen. The IR optimizer is extremely good at eliminating those so this will have no impact on the final executable performance. There is some opportunity for optimizing the initializer list generation that we could consider in subsequent commits. One notable opportunity would be to identify aggregate objects that occur in the same place in both initializers and do not require converison, those aggregates could be initialized as aggregates rather than fully scalarized. 2025-02-14[clang][CodeGen] `sret` args should always point to the `alloca` AS, so use ↵Alex Voicu
that (#114062) `sret` arguments are always going to reside in the stack/`alloca` address space, which makes the current formulation where their AS is derived from the pointee somewhat quaint. This patch ensures that `sret` ends up pointing to the `alloca` AS in IR function signatures, and also guards agains trying to pass a casted `alloca`d pointer to a `sret` arg, which can happen for most languages, when compiled for targets that have a non-zero `alloca` AS (e.g. AMDGCN) / map `LangAS::default` to a non-zero value (SPIR-V). A target could still choose to do something different here, by e.g. overriding `classifyReturnType` behaviour. In a broader sense, this patch extends non-aliased indirect args to also carry an AS, which leads to changing the `getIndirect()` interface. At the moment we're only using this for (indirect) returns, but it allows for future handling of indirect args themselves. We default to using the AllocaAS as that matches what Clang is currently doing, however if, in the future, a target would opt for e.g. placing indirect returns in some other storage, with another AS, this will require revisiting. --------- Co-authored-by: Matt Arsenault <arsenm2@gmail.com> Co-authored-by: Matt Arsenault <Matthew.Arsenault@amd.com>

2024-09-24[clang][CodeGen] Zero init unspecified fields in initializers in C (#97121)yabinc
When an initializer is provided to a variable, the Linux kernel relied on the compiler to zero-initialize unspecified fields, as clarified in https://www.spinics.net/lists/netdev/msg1007244.html. But clang doesn't guarantee this: 1. For a union type, if an empty initializer is given, clang only initializes bytes for the first field, left bytes for other (larger) fields are marked as undef. Accessing those undef bytes can lead to undefined behaviors. 2. For a union type, if an initializer explicitly sets a field, left bytes for other (larger) fields are marked as undef. 3. When an initializer is given, clang doesn't zero initialize padding. So this patch makes the following change: 1. In C, when an initializer is provided for a variable, zero-initialize undef and padding fields in the initializer. 2. Document the change in LanguageExtensions.rst. As suggested in https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/78034#issuecomment-2183437928, the change isn't required by C23, but it's standards conforming to do so. Fixes: https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/97459
2024-08-31[HLSL] Implement output parameter (#101083)Chris B
HLSL output parameters are denoted with the `inout` and `out` keywords in the function declaration. When an argument to an output parameter is constructed a temporary value is constructed for the argument. For `inout` pamameters the argument is initialized via copy-initialization from the argument lvalue expression to the parameter type. For `out` parameters the argument is not initialized before the call. In both cases on return of the function the temporary value is written back to the argument lvalue expression through an implicit assignment binary operator with casting as required. This change introduces a new HLSLOutArgExpr ast node which represents the output argument behavior. The OutArgExpr has three defined children: - An OpaqueValueExpr of the argument lvalue expression. - An OpaqueValueExpr of the copy-initialized parameter. - A BinaryOpExpr assigning the first with the value of the second. 2024-08-01Fix codegen of consteval functions returning an empty class, and related ↵Eli Friedman
issues (#93115) Fix codegen of consteval functions returning an empty class, and related issues If a class is empty, don't store it to memory: the store might overwrite useful data. Similarly, if a class has tail padding that might overlap other fields, don't store the tail padding to memory. The problem here turned out a bit more general than I initially thought: basically all uses of EmitAggregateStore were broken. Call lowering had a method that did mostly the right thing, though: CreateCoercedStore. Adapt CreateCoercedStore so it always does the conservatively right thing, and use it for both calls and ConstantExpr. Also, along the way, fix the "overlap" bit in AggValueSlot: the bit was set incorrectly for empty classes in some cases. Fixes #93040.

2024-06-10[CodeGen] Simplify codegen for array initialization (#93956)Nikita Popov
This makes codegen for array initialization simpler in two ways: 1. Drop the zero-index GEP at the start, which is no longer needed with opaque pointers. 2. Emit GEPs directly to the correct element, instead of having a long chain of +1 GEPs. This is more canonical, and also avoids regressions in unoptimized builds from #93823.

2024-04-29Re-apply "Emit missing cleanups for stmt-expr" and other commits (#89154)Utkarsh Saxena
Latest diff: https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/89154/files/f1ab4c2677394bbfc985d9680d5eecd7b2e6a882..adf9bc902baddb156c83ce0f8ec03c142e806d45 We address two additional bugs here: ### Problem 1: Deactivated normal cleanup still runs, leading to double-free Consider the following: ```cpp struct A { }; struct B { B(const A&); }; struct S { A a; B b; }; int AcceptS(S s); void Accept2(int x, int y); void Test() { Accept2(AcceptS({.a = A{}, .b = A{}}), ({ return; 0; })); } ``` We add cleanups as follows: 1. push dtor for field `S::a` 2. push dtor for temp `A{}` (used by ` B(const A&)` in `.b = A{}`) 3. push dtor for field `S::b` 4. Deactivate 3 `S::b`-> This pops the cleanup. 5. Deactivate 1 `S::a` -> Does not pop the cleanup as *2* is top. Should create _active flag_!! 6. push dtor for `~S()`. 7. ... It is important to deactivate **5** using active flags. Without the active flags, the `return` will fallthrough it and would run both `~S()` and dtor `S::a` leading to **double free** of `~A()`. In this patch, we unconditionally emit active flags while deactivating normal cleanups. These flags are deleted later by the `AllocaTracker` if the cleanup is not emitted. ### Problem 2: Missing cleanup for conditional lifetime extension We push 2 cleanups for lifetime-extended cleanup. The first cleanup is useful if we exit from the middle of the expression (stmt-expr/coro suspensions). This is deactivated after full-expr, and a new cleanup is pushed, extending the lifetime of the temporaries (to the scope of the reference being initialized). If this lifetime extension happens to be conditional, then we use active flags to remember whether the branch was taken and if the object was initialized. Previously, we used a **single** active flag, which was used by both cleanups. This is wrong because the first cleanup will be forced to deactivate after the full-expr and therefore this **active** flag will always be **inactive**. The dtor for the lifetime extended entity would not run as it always sees an **inactive** flag. In this patch, we solve this using two separate active flags for both cleanups. Both of them are activated if the conditional branch is taken, but only one of them is deactivated after the full-expr. --- Fixes https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/63818 Fixes https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/88478 --- Previous PR logs: 1. https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/85398 2. https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/88670 3. https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/88751 4. https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/pull/88884

2024-04-10[codegen] Emit missing cleanups for stmt-expr and coro suspensions [take-2] ↵Utkarsh Saxena
(#85398) Fixes https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/issues/63818 for control flow out of an expressions. #### Background A control flow could happen in the middle of an expression due to stmt-expr and coroutine suspensions. Due to branch-in-expr, we missed running cleanups for the temporaries constructed in the expression before the branch. Previously, these cleanups were only added as `EHCleanup` during the expression and as normal expression after the full expression. Examples of such deferred cleanups include: `ParenList/InitList`: Cleanups for fields are performed by the destructor of the object being constructed. `Array init`: Cleanup for elements of an array is included in the array cleanup. `Lifetime-extended temporaries`: reference-binding temporaries in braced-init are lifetime extended to the parent scope. `Lambda capture init`: init in the lambda capture list is destroyed by the lambda object. --- #### In this PR In this PR, we change some of the `EHCleanups` cleanups to `NormalAndEHCleanups` to make sure these are emitted when we see a branch inside an expression (through statement expressions or coroutine suspensions). These are supposed to be deactivated after full expression and destroyed later as part of the destructor of the aggregate or array being constructed. To simplify deactivating cleanups, we add two utilities as well: * `DeferredDeactivationCleanupStack`: A stack to remember cleanups with deferred deactivation. * `CleanupDeactivationScope`: RAII for deactivating cleanups added to the above stack. --- #### Deactivating normal cleanups These were previously `EHCleanups` and not `Normal` and **deactivation** of **required** `Normal` cleanups had some bugs. These specifically include deactivating `Normal` cleanups which are not the top of `EHStack` [source1](https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/92b56011e6b61e7dc1628c0431ece432f282b3cb/clang/lib/CodeGen/CGCleanup.cpp#L1319), [2](https://github.com/llvm/llvm-project/blob/92b56011e6b61e7dc1628c0431ece432f282b3cb/clang/lib/CodeGen/CGCleanup.cpp#L722-L746). This has not been part of our test suite (maybe it was never required before statement expressions). In this PR, we also fix the emission of required-deactivated-normal cleanups.
2024-04-01[HLSL] Implement array temporary support (#79382)Chris B
HLSL constant sized array function parameters do not decay to pointers. Instead constant sized array types are preserved as unique types for overload resolution, template instantiation and name mangling. This implements the change by adding a new `ArrayParameterType` which represents a non-decaying `ConstantArrayType`. The new type behaves the same as `ConstantArrayType` except that it does not decay to a pointer. Values of `ConstantArrayType` in HLSL decay during overload resolution via a new `HLSLArrayRValue` cast to `ArrayParameterType`. `ArrayParamterType` values are passed indirectly by-value to functions in IR generation resulting in callee generated memcpy instructions. The behavior of HLSL function calls is documented in the [draft language specification](https://microsoft.github.io/hlsl-specs/specs/hlsl.pdf) under the Expr.Post.Call heading. Additionally the design of this implementation approach is documented in [Clang's documentation](https://clang.llvm.org/docs/HLSL/FunctionCalls.html) Resolves #70123

2024-02-26[InstrProf] Single byte counters in coverage (#75425)gulfemsavrun
This patch inserts 1-byte counters instead of an 8-byte counters into llvm profiles for source-based code coverage. The origial idea was proposed as block-cov for PGO, and this patch repurposes that idea for coverage: https://groups.google.com/g/llvm-dev/c/r03Z6JoN7d4 The current 8-byte counters mechanism add counters to minimal regions, and infer the counters in the remaining regions via adding or subtracting counters. For example, it infers the counter in the if.else region by subtracting the counters between if.entry and if.then regions in an if statement. Whenever there is a control-flow merge, it adds the counters from all the incoming regions. However, we are not going to be able to infer counters by subtracting two execution counts when using single-byte counters. Therefore, this patch conservatively inserts additional counters for the cases where we need to add or subtract counters. Note that use of `-Wno-gnu-empty-initializer seems` to be quite low in the wild (https://sourcegraph.com/search?q=context%3Aglobal+-file%3A.*test.*+%22-Wno-gnu-empty-initializer%22&patternType=standard&sm=1&groupBy=repo which currently only gives 8 hits total), so this is not expected to be an overly disruptive change. But I'm adding the clang vendors review group just in case this expectation is wrong. * Reworded the diagnostic wording to be about a C2x extension, added a pre-C2x compat warning. * Allow {} to zero initialize a VLA This functionality is exposed as an extension in all older C modes (same as the GNU extension was), but does *not* allow the extension for VLA initialization in C++ due to concern about handling non-trivially constructible types. 2023-03-17Make globals used for array initialization codegen constantHans Wennborg
As pointed out in D133835 these globals will never be written to (they're only used for trivially copyable types), so they can always be constant. Differential revision: https://reviews.llvm.org/D146211
2023-03-16Emit const globals with constexpr destructor as constant LLVM valuesHans Wennborg
This follows 2b4fa53 which made Clang not emit destructor calls for such objects. However, they would still not get emitted as constants since CodeGenModule::isTypeConstant() returns false if the destructor is constexpr. This change adds a param to make isTypeConstant() ignore the dtor, allowing the caller to check it instead. Fixes Issue #61212 Differential revision: https://reviews.llvm.org/D145369
2023-02-09[clang][codegen] Fix emission of consteval constructor of derived typeMariya Podchishchaeva
For simple derived type ConstantEmitter returns a struct of the same size but different type which is then stored field-by-field into memory via pointer to derived type. In case base type has more fields than derived, the incorrect GEP is emitted. So, just cast pointer to derived type to appropriate type with enough fields. 2023-01-12[clang] Reland parenthesized aggregate init patchesAlan Zhao
This commit relands the patches for implementing P0960R3 and P1975R0, which describe initializing aggregates via a parenthesized list. The relanded commits are: * 40c52159d3ee - P0960R3 and P1975R0: Allow initializing aggregates from a parenthesized list of values * c77a91bb7ba7 - Remove overly restrictive aggregate paren init logic * 32d7aae04fdb - Fix a clang crash on invalid code in C++20 mode This patch also fixes a crash in the original implementation. Previously, if the input tried to call an implicitly deleted copy or move constructor of a union, we would then try to initialize the union by initializing it's first element with a reference to a union. This behavior is incorrect (we should fail to initialize) and if the type of the first element has a constructor with a single template typename parameter, then Clang will explode. This patch fixes that issue by checking that constructor overload resolution did not result in a deleted function before attempting parenthesized aggregate initialization. Additionally, this patch also includes D140159, which contains some minor fixes made in response to code review comments in the original implementation that were made after that patch was submitted.
